How to Travel

by Alyssa Ramos

Note: Original title is “How To Travel Solo in Sydney When It’s Raining (and On A Price range)”

Did you know that just like in LA, it hardly EVER rains in Sydney? Yup. Sydney is recognized for its glorious warm and sunny climate which leads to its infamous beaches generally getting packed with bikini clad Victoria’s Secret models and attractive surfer boys. Or so they say. I wouldn’t know mainly because the 3 days of the year I occurred to go to Sydney, there wasn’t just a non-stop torrential  down pour, but it was also freezing like the Antarctic, which means that no one was at the beach except die-hard surfers, and devoted vacationers, like me.

Luckily I’m a “the-wine-glass-is-half-full” type of gal, so alternatively of letting the climate, the truth that I was solo and only had three days there, and the teeny tiny tiny obstacle of having no debit or credit card get me down, I decided to actually just go with it. I did every little thing that was recommended in the touristy books in addition to factors previous guests and my Sydney Blogger Guide from ManyManyAdventures.com suggested, but I have to say, making friends with locals and tagging along with them to their regular happenings was the very best idea and 1 of the most extraordinary experiences ever. My subconscious was beaming and providing me higher-fives the whole time I was there, and I’m still reveling in my fantastic fortune.

So here’s what I did in leu of bronzing at the beach all day lengthy:

1. Keep Somewhere Neighborhood

I stayed in Bondi Beach exactly where quite a few locals live if they can afford it.

Obviously when I was organizing my trip, I only looked at hotels IN Sydney due to the fact I didn’t know any greater. Sydney is great and all, but it’s filled with either tourists or business people, both of which do not stick around when it’s raining. Locals however will nevertheless hang out in regional bars and cafés, regardless of the strange water that falls from the sky.

Locals DO NOT live IN Sydney. It’s wayyy too highly-priced, not to mention deemed “touristy” to them. That’s why just after hearing endless recommendations about Bondi Beach, I decided to book the least expensive spot I could discover there so I could act like a regional. I ended up staying in a self-catering apartment named Ultimate Apartments Bondi Beach which I located on Booking.com, only a few blocks from the beach, that my dear mother had to spend for through email with her credit card because they didn’t accept cash (and that’s all I had at that point). This allowed me to wander about Bondi and expertise all of the small bars, restaurants, cafés, and shops that I otherwise would have had no notion existed. This expertise came in handy when no one particular in Sydney was out and about but Everybody in Bondi was possessing rain parties!

2. Take a City Sightseeing Tour

Tour busses are a should if you’re a solo traveler.

So you won’t be capable to definitely see every little thing as well as you would when it’s clear out, but fortunately you have lots of time on your hands due to the fact there’s not much else to do when it’s raining. I nevertheless sat up prime of the double decker City Sightseeing Tour bus with a couple of other brave souls when it was only drizzling (but still freezing) and it wasn’t that negative, so if my 106 pound, Florida-born, LA-living, “don’t-get-my-hair-wet”, ass can tolerate it, so can anybody. The tour will take you around to all the important websites and explain what anything is, so that if it takes place to clear up, you can constantly go back to your favourite spot!

Bonus: The City Sightseeing Tour bus doubles as a low-cost implies of transportation compared to the higher-priced taxis and confusing buses!

3. Drink A Lot Of Wine

I found a lunch and pizza specific in Darling Harbor. It’s actually all I ate the entire trip.

This is a no brainer. At least for me…I would almost certainly be performing this anywhere I went anyway, but when that rain started coming down difficult, extra glasses of wine began acquiring poured. Since I was broke, with only about $200 AUD to final me the rest of my trip, I would appear for places with specials or happy hours, and use them as an excuse to use their shelter and free of charge Wifi. I found a ton in Bondi Beach, but also a couple of in Darling Harbor. I really feel like a lot of people don’t like the thought of getting a drink or bite somewhere by themselves, but it’s actually not that terrible! It’s entertaining really, and it forces you to speak to folks and really spend attention to your surroundings!

My absolute favourite location to go for wine was the Sydney Opera Bar. I imply, you really can’t beat a chilled glass of Chardonnay with an up close and individual view of the Sydney Opera Home and the Sydney Harbor Bridge lit up at evening.

four. Go to In-Doorsy Areas

The Sydney Aquarium was cool until I got locked inside of it.

Duh. What else would you do? Go to the beach? Just kidding, I did that as well. So like I mentioned I was non-cease the complete time, attempting to squeeze in as substantially as achievable in my 3 days, but whenever it was raining genuinely negative, I attempted to do in-doorsy things, like go to the Sydney Aquarium. I’d hugely advise it except for the fact that I got LOCKED inside of it given that they decided to close early. Main fail.

There’s also a ton of museums. It’s not actually my point, and almost certainly not yours either, but, they’re there. 1 in-doorsy spot that was actually quite cool to see when it was raining was the Sydney Tower Eye, which is essentially a 360 degree area at the best of the Westfield mall/tower.  I bought a ticket to see it, but just like the Sydney Aquarium that I was forced to sneak into…my ticket wasn’t even checked.

five. (Nevertheless) Go To The Beach

How To Travel Solo in Sydney
Yes. It is so cold that I’m in a snow jacket and there is no one at Manly Beach. But I went anyway.

How a lot of individuals can say that they have been the only particular person on Bondi Beach at 1 point? Almost certainly a handful of, but I’m a single of those few! I got to actually see the beach prior to every square inch of it was covered in beach towels and surfboards! At very first, it was a small depressing, but right after some locals explained the rarity, it was truly quite amazing. I refilled that half glass of wine.

Right after Bondi, I took the bus into Sydney to catch the ferry from Circular Quay (pronounced “key” for some weird purpose) to Manly Beach, a further highly recommended local spot to go to in spite of the dreary climate. The ferry is cheap, only about $9AUD or so round trip, and takes you for a nice tiny cruise past the Sydney Harbor Bridge, The Sydney Opera House, and the Sydney Harbor on your way to Manly Beach. Given that the climate was bad, my beautiful tiny cruise felt a lot more like the Titanic was sinking, but I wrote it off as superior GoPro footage.

What do you do at the beach when it’s shitty out? Obtain the closest restaurant or bar that overlooks the beach, of course! I was in a position to take exactly six photos of Manly Beach prior to my entire body started shivering uncontrollably, which is when I identified the only restaurant that was actually on the beach, The Pantry.  I swear, it’s like I send telepathic SOS messages out for wine and warmth and then poof, there they are! Despite the fact that I attempted to discover (and by ‘explore’ I imply find somewhere cheaper) a small a lot more, the tiny town was fairly considerably dead with the exception of the insane boys surfing in the Good White Shark-infested water and my fellow tourists gawking at them from the shore. Although I couldn’t actually experience the beach, I nonetheless had a mighty fine time hunting at it through the window as I sipped my (property) Pinot Grigio, and ate my Grilled Halloumi Cheese (cheapest vegetarian issue on the menu).

The most effective element aside from bantering with the really interesting locals in the souvenir shops (I could literally only afford two bracelets for $4AUD and they kept trying to apartment switch with me in LA), was that on the way back the sky cleared up and we got to see a attractive sunset as we rode back into the harbor. The ferry was moving so slow that we also got to see the mesmerizing twinkling of the city lights at evening!

6. Make Mates With Locals

How To Travel Solo in Sydney
This is the only “local” I wasn’t too shy to take a image with…

Because I was by myself, and I’m not anti-social, I ended up creating good friends with locals in Sydney, but at the most randomest of times and areas. The first time was on the Sydney Sightseeing Tour bus when I casually asked a younger guide exactly where I could buy an umbrella, the second was when I took a photo of a group of guys at the Sydney Opera Home and ended up hanging out with them and learning that Tazmania is a genuine spot, and the third…well…that was just pure luck. I imply, it’s not just about every day a tall, dark, and handsome surfer jogs up to you on your last day in Australia and asks you to watch the sunset and then takes you to dinner. But I digress.

The initially thing you need to know is that Australian men and women (AKA Aussies, AKA Ozzies, AKA….hot), Really like Americans and particularly like LA. That was an really broad statement, so I’m going to just go ahead and back track and right that to *several.

Just before I departed on my lovely little trip around the globe, I had no thought how I was going to meet men and women, where to meet them, or in basic, what to anticipate. What I discovered is that as long as you strategy areas and men and women with an open thoughts, a clever demeanor, and a friendly smile, you’ll not only encounter a diverse culture like no other, but you’ll retain buddies across the globe for the rest of your life.

Other areas in addition to Bondi Beach exactly where locals hang out are Surry Hills, King Street, Grebe, and Darlington. If you come about to stay in Bondi Beach, O’Brien Street and Hall Street have a ton of cool restaurants and bars like MAD Pizza ē Bar and Bondi Hardware,

7. Just Say No To Down Time

This café in Bondi Beach is known as Alice and Gertrudes and is constructed inside of an old bookshop! Super hipster.

Seriously although. You’re in freaking Australia, you don’t will need to pause for social media, take a nap, and you definitely do not need to have to be maintaining up with the Kardashians. Yes you’ll get tired, but good issue there are tons and tons of cafés and coffee shops get a coffee at a regional shop like Alice and Gertrude’s in Bondi and chat with locals, they’ll get you up and running in no time! Plus, you can usually sleep on the plane on the way household, or like…when you’re dead.

Set alarms and reminders if you need to, but get up and go see and do as a great deal as doable, mainly because you’ll never ever know when or if you’ll get to go back!
